Isla Holbox

Tucked away off the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Isla Holbox is a quiet sanctuary where sandy streets replace pavement, golf carts replace cars, and everyone seems to stop for the sunsets.

It’s a few hours’ drive, plus a short ferry ride, away from Cancun, but it’s a world away otherwise. A small island, measuring just a mile across and ~25 miles long, only one end of the island is developed, with the rest a nature reserve.

This month’s newsletter focuses on the wildlife, and avian wildlife in particular. However, the small town offers even more sights, from colorful homes, to street art and glowing bioluminescent waters (in the right season). A refreshing escape from its neighbors to the south.

Iguana.
If I didn’t know better, I’d say evolution trained them to pose for the camera.

A Great Blue Heron, and perhaps the inspiration for Scrooge in a Night Before Christmas.
And then Flamingos. So many Flamingos.
Is there a more awkward bird flying? I don’t think so.
Dolphins.
