Every year I take a look back at the photos I took that year to see what stands out, remember my trips, and provide inspiration for the next year. I share a few of my favorites here. This year, I worked to narrow it down to fewer photos, having allowed my “best of” to balloon to 30 or more in recent years. Here, I offer 20 of my current favorites from the year.
As usual, these arguably aren’t my best photos, by whatever measure. They’re certainly not my most “liked” or commented-on photos (some of these have never even been shared). Rather, they’re the photos that I remember the experience around the most. For many of these photos, those were the moments that defied expectations. The weather was better than expected, I caught a fleeting moment that I didn’t expect to see, or wildlife appeared when I was least expecting it.
Thanks for following along for another year.
A storm approaches El Morro fortress at dusk. I wasn’t expecting any interesting weather this evening, but loved the show nature put on for me (luckily, from a safe distance).
Middle of the day. Photographing uphill. There are multiple reasons this shot shouldn’t have worked, but I loved the simplicity of it. A family on vacation, dad out front, the kid being dragged along. The non-descript surroundings provides for a bit of timelessness.
A deer enjoying a buffet of wildflowers. It had been a somewhat lackluster morning photographing when I decided to stop and photograph this field. This deer was alone and not close at first, but slowly made their way towards me while I photographed.
A group of men watching a game, if I recall, while a festival with music and dancing was happening just outside the window. We were in the same room doing portraits of the dancers when I got this photo.
A worker planes a timber in his outdoor shop. We were walking by and had somewhere we had to get to on time, but I still wish I could have spent time here photographing this outdoor shop. Still, glad I was able to capture this one image.
A young nun in Bhutan. We were just wrapping up our visit when this nun who we were talking with (she was quite the jokester) left us to go sit down. One of the stray dogs they care for then came over to her.
He kicks, he scores. A pick-up game of football in robes and sandals.
One of my favorite photos of my trip to Bhutan. The young monk, taking a pause from reading, turns into the light coming in from a window.
Champion sleeper. In a room with drums and horns blaring, this kid was dozing off.
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the Supertree Grove in Singapore as much as I did. It was a lovely way to spend an evening.
Sunrise over Dubai. Made getting up early while jet lagged worth it.
The Burj Khalifa at dusk. Taken from my hotel. I had actually forgotten at first that I chose this hotel for the view (and outdoor terrace).
A little fall fly fishing with a great friend. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and the fall colors, despite being late autumn, really put on a show.
I wasn’t meaning to take a photograph this evening, but I had left my camera in the car and was glad I did when I turned down this road.
Blowing grass at sunset. I was photographing the fort in Old San Juan Puerto Rico when I spotted this composition.
Crested Butte on a summer camping trip.
Stowe, Vermont when the sun finally decided to come out.
A little Americana in Stowe Vermont, while walking down main street.
A New England Fall
One of the last photos I took in Newport, Rhode Island on our final night. The sky finally showed some color after an otherwise overcast stay. Taken while sitting at our table having a beer.
