The sun cresting the horizon. The hardest part in capturing this photo was trying to time the shot with the boat traffic. A slow-moving barge almost destroyed this scene I was hoping to capture. It transited behind the opera house just in time.

Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour. Perhaps the most recognizable part of Sydney, with its iconic Harbour Bridge and, of course, the Sydney Opera House.

While many great cities were founded around safe harbours—for protection from storms and invaders, or for access to trade—I’m hard-pressed to think of another city where the harbour itself is such an iconic part of its identity.

Along its shores stands the famous Harbour Bridge, now approaching its 100th anniversary in 2032. Nearby sits the instantly recognizable Sydney Opera House. The harbour is alive with ferries crisscrossing the water, while miles of waterfront paths and public spaces invite you to slow down and take it all in.

Sydney was admittedly just a stopover on this trip, but it’s one we’re very glad we made. Even with only a short visit, the harbour left a strong impression—and, fortunately for me, plenty of photographic opportunities.

The roof (or roofs) of the opera house. Made from more than a million tiles. They are self-cleaning (in that rain alone can rinse them clean) and were specially designed not to produce a glare so as not to blind onlookers.
