Behind the shot: The Palouse

Behind the shot: The Palouse

The Palouse is a region in southeastern Washington (and a little bit of NE Oregon and into ID, depending on your definition). I lived in the region for three years and this was one of my favorite areas to go, particularly in spring and early summer when the fields were flush with green. This photo was taken in summer (late July), not too long before harvest started.

Behind the shot: Yosemite Falls

Behind the shot: Yosemite Falls

This is one of my most recent outings, taken in Yosemite the weekend before Thanksgiving. It’s a popular photo location in Yosemite Valley and you’ve likely seen photos similar to this one. I had hoped to capture it in the snow, but there was no fresh snowfall this weekend. (I’ll just have to go back!)

Behind the shot: Rodeo Beach

I thought I’d share a photo from this past week. This isn’t as much “how I took the shot” (though I’ll touch on that too), as the planning that went into the shot. (Doing research for when and where to shoot is one of my favorite evening activities…)

First shots in my new city

First shots in my new city

We’re still settling in our new city, San Francisco, but I’ve already been able to get out and explore. So far that has largely meant the more “touristy” shots, but it’s always a fun challenge to capture even what has been done before, and perhaps put your own twist on it.

Documenting trail work

Documenting trail work

This past summer I volunteered for Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC), a statewide nonprofit that engages volunteers in stewardship projects across the state.  This includes restoration work, invasive weed control, trail maintenance, new trail construction, and more.

Previously, I had photographed other trail work trips I had been on (see previous post, American Hiking Society (AHS) Annual Report Cover), but this was the first time where I got to primarily photograph, rather than primarily work while occasionally grabbing the camera for a quick shot. It was a fun change of pace (not that hard labor isn’t fun too!) and a good excuse to photograph something besides landscapes.
