After a few days in Antigua, the rest of the week in Guatemala took us farther into the highlands. It didn’t take long to realize that while Antigua is beautiful, it’s only a small piece of what makes the country so interesting to explore.
One stop was Lake Atitlán, surrounded by steep hills and volcanoes that rise straight out of the water. It’s an incredible setting, and the villages around the lake each have their own personality.
We also spent time wandering through a few of Guatemala’s famous markets, including Almolonga near Quetzaltenango and the sprawling market in Chichicastenango. Markets are always equal parts rewarding and challenging to photograph—there’s color, movement, and interesting scenes, but tight quarters and harsh light, too.
This second newsletter shares a few images from those stops along the way—scenes from the lake, the markets, and the people.
All photos from November, 2025.
